KILL LIST- Awesome new horror movie from the UK. Hard to describe without ruining some of the nasty surprises it has up its sleeve, so I’ll just say that if you like horror movies and can understand thick British accents, you should definitely check it out.
PROJECT NIM- The last documentary I was this excited about was MAN ON WIRE, which makes sense, as this was made by the same people. The story revolves around a chimpanzee named Nim, who was the subject of questionable scientific experiments throughout the 1970s. At bare minimum, this movie provides a shitload of high-quality chimpanzee footage- and if you pay attention, your mind will be blown by the bizarre human drama that surrounded Nim throughout his unenviable life.
BOBBY FISCHER AGAINST THE WORLD- If you told me 2 hours ago that a documentary about a chess player could be extremely interesting, I would have said “Bullshit”, but now here I am, telling you that very thing. Don’t say “Bullshit”. Rent BOBBY FISCHER AGAINST THE WORLD instead and see that it’s true!
GAME OF THRONES- People always be coming at you with how whatever show is the greatest show in the history of shows. To date, none of the shows have been worthy of the ballyhoo, but this one comes somewhat close- damned entertaining and chock-full of foxy fresh faces. And let’s not forget about all the incest and killing!
KNUCKLE- Documentary about the McDonaghs and the Joyces, feuding Irish clans that resolve their many disputes with ferocious bareknuckle boxing matches. Did I say resolve? Not quite accurate, being that the victors typically make videos of themselves gloating, and then send the tapes to the losers. Not impressive from a sportsmanship standpoint, but damned entertaining for the home viewer.
The Phenakistoscope was an early animation device that used the persistence of vision principle to create an illusion of motion. It uses a spinning disc attached vertically on a handle. Around the center of the disc a series of pictures was drawn corresponding to frames of the animation; around its circumference was a series of radial slits. The user would spin the disc and look through the moving slits at the disc’s reflection in a mirror. The scanning of the slits across the reflected images kept them from simply blurring together, so that the user would see a rapid succession of images with the appearance of a motion picture.
In other words, this device was clever and completely awesome. And this phenakistoscope gif has pretty much made our day, so we thought you might enjoy it too. Just look at it! Are those fishmen dancing around a many-tentacled demon? Are the fishmen wearing snappy outfits? Cthulhu fhtagn!

What a Nifty Gif!
MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE- Creepy, yet not-unsexy slow-boiler about a young woman who shows up unexpectedly at the home of her estranged older sister. The sister and her husband are glad to help out, but soon start to notice odd behavior. Flashbacks reveal that the younger sister is on the run from a Manson-ish cult. Intensity ensues.
THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 - If you got to the end of THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 1 and were like “I need at least 90 more minutes of this awesome Human Centipede entertainment”, your ship has really come in.
SUPERSTAR - THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY - Finally tracked down a decent copy of this. Todd Haynes is all bigtime now (and rightly so!) but his career began with this humble biopic that used Barbie dolls to tell Karen Carpenter’s sad story. Technically crude it may be, but don’t be surprised if you find yourself getting choked up!
SHUT UP LITTLE MAN! - It appears they’ve made a documentary about Raymond and Peter, those rascally rummies who yelled all that mean stuff at each other back in the day. Some guys who lived next door recorded the duo’s booze-fueled battles, released a greatest-hits tape, and a pre-Internet viral sensation was born!
